Afton Residence

I call the exterior style of my family’s house “East meets Midwest” because it combines aspects of both New England and Midwestern vernacular architecture.

A narrow but open plan and ample windows insure daylight and natural ventilation into all parts of the house.  Detaching the garage allowed for more windows at the house and also kept the two story garage from overwhelming the house.  Screened porches on both ends of the house promote a strong connection to the landscape, and also allow the house to be opened up to cooling breezes in the summer.

Since we built it ourselves, the design had to be buildable by amateur carpenters and affordable.
